The Shopkeeper: A Steve Dancy Tale

One of the series of books that has been catching good reviews have been the Steve Dancy series. Although I have not developed much of a taste for westerns, this one pretty much held my attention throughout. The story is about a New York shopkeeper called Steve Dancy. He wishes to explore and seek out adventure, so towards that end he sells off his shop, discards the comforts of his own home for the harsh air of the West.

Hundred in the Hand Reviewed

When the English came to the shores of America, the power that they received came at the cost of the original inhabitants of the land, the Red Indians. Over the years many books have been compiled about the Red Indians and the "white skinned people" who so rudely snatched away their land but the problem with these books is the fact that all those who wrote them belonged to the latter category. Therefore a touch of partiality towards the latter will creep in giving us a one sided history of the events that unfolded.

Lonesome Dove by Larry Mcmurtry

It has been a long time since I have read a book that has been able to chill my veins or make me cry. The Lonesome Dove is exactly what I needed. Although it is a long read, when you start you easily get hooked.

The Big Sky by AB Guthrie

The plot of the story is set in the landscape of the mountains and the early days of the fur trade. During those days men left the comforts of their own homes to set out for the West trusting their instincts and the directions of the rivers.

True Grit: The Nitty Gritty Book Review

I decided to read this book after I watched the Academy Awards a little while ago. John Wayne received an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role in the 1969 version of True Grit, and the version that came out last year was nominated for ten Oscars. I have not seen either version, and decided to read the book before checking them out.

O.K. This one follows rayon, Harry, and the girlfriend about one year after Pronto left off. Basic back story is that in Pronto, Raylon took it upon himself to save Harry and girlfriend.

Yeary pens a suspense-filled character driven western romance with "Texas True." True Cameron longs for a loving husband, a big family, and to live on a ranch, but to make these dreams come true, her patience, courage, and inner strength will be tested like never before.

Hexed: The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne

I am impressed with Hearne's knowledge of magic. As with the first book in this series, Hounded, this fantasy, is intriguing as the hero, a 2000 year old Druid living in present day Arizona, fights evil forces.

Set in the American West, "A Western Saga Anthology" focuses on the McTavish family as they venture to settle and tame the unknown. A rousing set of character driven short stories promises to have the reader turning the page.

Reviewing Zane Grey's Classic' Riders of the Purple Sage'

I must confess that two things which I have loved are t western films and books of that turbulent period referred to as the 'wild west' in American history of the 19th century. This was a period that created legends of its own in the shape of Doc Holiday, Billy the Kid and a host of other characters. One writer who brought that period alive was Zane Grey.
